Donna's Story

“All good art evolves from the same principles of design . . . harmony, balance and rhythm. Whether it's painting, jewelry, sculpture, or interior design, these three principles of design hold true.”

Educated in New York City, Donna Leonhardt studied art under the guidance and direction of two extremely influential teachers, whose vision and use of color led her to fulfilling her art degree and future career as an art teacher in the New Jersey public school system. During her ten years as an educator she also pursued interior design, eventually establishing her own business in the suburbs of Chicago. In 1990 Wallternatives was born and thrived as a prosperous business for 28 years.

From an early age Donna pursued painting. However, when her children were born she left her art career behind and devoted all of her energy to her family. “After all, they are a work of art as well, no?” So, for over 20 years, the paints and brushes lay idle until Donna and her husband, Tom, found their dream home in St. Kitts. It was then that her two sons encouraged her to paint again. “It’s a passion that I was able to nurture once again in St. Kitts. It makes me feel alive! It’s like a rebirth — an obsession that was deep within me, emerging once more. I can search my soul, dig out what is deep within, and emerge refreshed and renewed when I’ve captured what I feel.” Now living in Davidson, North Carolina, Donna draws inspiration from the people and environment that surround her.

Donna also pursues jewelry design as another means of creative expression. She has exhibited her work in many boutiques and galleries in the U.S. and the Caribbean, as well as dozens of juried Fine Art Festivals in Illinois. Having traveled extensively, her semi-precious stones and pendants are from all over the world.

And from where did the name Soleon come? It is a combination of Donna’s maiden name, Soldivera, and her married name, Leonhardt. She and Tom have been together for over 50 years and it seems appropriate that the name she uses to represent her art would include both.
